Bowmore Distillery – Island of Islay, Scotland

Bowmore Distillery

Established in 1779, this legendary distillery lies on the south eastern coast of Lock Indaal, on the island of Islay. Upon visiting this distillery, the scenes are reminiscent of a Greek island. White buildings with a blueish-green shoreline, the setting has every intention of being a vacation getaway.

Once inside, the allure continues to grow. Exposed wooden beams juxtaposed with modern glass framing lays the foundation for a modern twist to one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. On the first floor is a gift shop that offers some of the most popular bottles of single malt, uniquely brewed and aged beer, as well as an assortment of novelty items. The second floor is where most of the action happens. A beautifully simplistic bar overlooks the shoreline and provides a sublime setting for a tasting session. The host will take you through a series of malts, which are very generously poured and range in years.

The experience from start to finish is extraordinary and you will sense the level of work that the Bowmore family has put into their products. Iain Banks, author of the book Raw Spirit, said it best when he stated “If you can’t find a Bowmore to fall in love with, you may have to consider very seriously the possibility that you’re wasting your money drinking whisky at all.”
